Bryan Johnson recently spent 56 minutes in a 93°C dry sauna, swallowed an ingestible temperature sensor, drew blood six times and spent more than $21,000 answering one question: do sauna benefits depend on time or on body temperature?
The answer appears to be heat dose.
In his experiment, one of the body's key heat shock proteins, HSP27, only activated when his core temperature remained above 39°C for approximately 15 minutes. Simply sitting in the sauna was not enough. The biological response depended on how hot the body's core became and how long it remained there.
This challenges the idea that twenty minutes in a sauna is a universal prescription. Twenty minutes may produce meaningful health benefits, but it may not be enough to maximise the body's heat response.
Heat shock proteins act like a cellular maintenance crew. They help manage inflammation, protect blood vessels, support healthy adaptation and assist in clearing damaged cellular material.
The broader lesson extends beyond saunas. Population studies provide averages. They tell us what tends to work. They rarely tell us what is happening inside your body.

What Should You Actually Do?
- For general cardiovascular and longevity benefits: aim for 15–20 minutes at 80–90°C, two to five times per week.
- For more advanced heat adaptation: gradually progress towards 25–40 minutes at 90–95°C if well tolerated.
- Avoid chasing extremes. Bryan Johnson's 56-minute session at 93°C was an experiment, not a recommendation.
- The objective is to increase heat dose progressively while maintaining safety and recovery.
